T
he staphylococcus bacteria is much
more prevalent in public places than what was previously thought.
In a research study conducted by University of Miami’s
Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in conjunction
with the Leonard M Miller School of Medicine have found that
swimmers using public beaches have significantly increased
their exposure to staph organisms. The ocean waters are also
one of the best conduits for staph contagious bacteria, the
study also found.
The research results found that swimmers in subtropical marine
waters have markedly increased their risk to thirty percent
of being exposed to staph either from you or from others around
you. According to Dr Lisa Plano, the associate professor of
pediatrics and microbiology and immunology at the University
of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, the exposure is
at its greatest because carriers of the staph bacteria carry
the contagion into the water. Staph contagious conditions
are presented when there are open wounds in the water or those
with weak immune systems ingest staph infested water. What
the study also showed that only three percent of the staph
contagious bacteria dissipated into the water is MRSA, the
antibiotic resistant staph.
The study done by the University of Miami clearly exhibited
the fact that public ocean beaches can be a hotbed for staph
infection. In other studies, the staph contagious areas that
have been identified were schools, dormitories, military barracks,
households, correctional facilities and day care centers.
The factors that make these staph contagious zones is the
overcrowdedness, frequent skin to skin contract, skins that
have been compromised by cuts and abrasions, contaminated
surfaces and common items. The lack of cleanliness in these
areas makes these high-density areas staph contagious zones.
One of the most feared forms of staph is the community acquired
MRSA because it is the cause of severe infections. This is
different from the hospital bred staph infection as this more
virulent form had been bread because of the misuse of antibiotics
making it immune to most medication now available. Staph contagious
areas have bred this virulent form of staphylococcus bacteria
and life threatening as it affects internal body organs such
as the lungs. This kind of infection had become resistant
to most types of antibiotics. This kind of MRSA is localized
mostly in the nasal region or the skin and this makes this
kind of staph very contagious. Even the healthiest person
can be a carrier of the staph bacteria and those with compromised
immune systems are most likely to succumb to the infection’s
deadly effects.
It would be easy to avoid the high density, low hygiene areas
that have been identified as staph contagious hotspots like
public beaches. The problem though is that the highly contagious
nature of staph bacteria makes the mere avoidance not a guarantee
to be safe from infection. Another way to go about it is the
application of disinfecting agents in the hands or other areas
of the body to be able to counteract the possibility of being
infected.
